Chemistries of Ozone for Municipal Pool and Spa Water Treatment

This technical paper explains how ozone for pool and spa water treatment can improve water quality by working as a powerful oxidizer and disinfectant before chlorine or bromine residuals are added. The document highlights that corona discharge ozone systems produce much higher ozone concentrations than UV ozone systems, allowing better ozone dissolution, stronger oxidation of contaminants, and more effective disinfection in municipal pools, commercial pools, and spas. It also explains that when ozone is applied correctly in the treatment process, it can help reduce chlorine demand, lower the formation of unwanted chlorinated byproducts such as trihalomethanes (THMs), improve water clarity, and support better overall pool water quality.

For pool and spa applications, the paper emphasizes that performance depends on using the right ozone concentration, proper gas-to-water transfer, effective Venturi injection or contacting, adequate reaction time, and, in larger systems, supporting steps such as flocculation, filtration, degassing, and granular activated carbon (GAC). It also shows that ozone is especially valuable in systems seeking better control of organic contaminants, chloramines, odor, and high bather-load water quality issues.
