How to Select the Right Ozone Generator for Bottled Water Production

We were recently contacted for a project that utilized a 210 g/h air-fed ozone system for a bottled water facility. On paper, the numbers looked strong. In practice, the treatment system was not optimized for effective ozonation and was underperforming and wasting both ozone and energy.

The Problem: Low Dissolution, High Waste

We were approached by a company planning to install an ozone system for a bottled water facility. When we reviewed the specifications of the ozone generator they intended to use, we were surprised to find that, despite being rated at 210 g/h, it was designed to operate with ambient air. This indicated that the system would generate ozone at a concentration of only 20 g/nM³, which is equivalent to 1.5% by weight, an extremely low level for effective dissolution in water.

Such a low concentration drastically limits ozone’s solubility. In typical bottling plant conditions, only 5–10% of the ozone generated would actually dissolve in the water. The rest would be wasted and needed to be destroyed using an off-gas ozone destructor—an added cost both in equipment and energy. In other words, less than 21 g/h of the 210 g/h was effectively used for water disinfection. This inefficiency increased operational complexity and energy consumption, compromising the reliability and cost-effectiveness of the overall water treatment process.

The Upgrade: Atlas 30 + Oxygen = Superior Performance

We recommended a more advanced and efficient solution using the Atlas 30 – oxygen feed ozone generator. While its nominal capacity is 30 g/h, the Atlas 30 produces ozone at concentrations of up to 12% by weight, enabling over 90% dissolution efficiency.
In practical terms, this means that a 30 g/h oxygen-fed system can deliver up to 27 g/h of dissolved ozone, surpassing the adequate performance of the previous 210 g/h air-fed system, which dissolved less than 21 g/h.

This improved transfer efficiency ensures consistent and effective disinfection of product water while minimizing waste and energy consumption. Additionally, the use of oxygen and a high-concentration ozone output results in greater reliability, more straightforward system integration, and enhanced microbiological control, all of which are essential for meeting the stringent quality standards of the bottled water industry.

Ozone Efficiency in Numbers

System Nominal Output O₃ Concentration Dissolution Efficiency Effective O₃ in Water
210 g/h
(Air-fed)
210 g/h up to 1.5% ~10% ~21 g/h
Atlas 30
(Oxygen-fed)
30 g/h up to 12% ~90% ~27 g/h

The Atlas 30 demonstrates superior effectiveness in water treatment processes by delivering higher adequate ozone levels, which directly enhances water quality. By optimizing the water treatment process, the Atlas 30 ensures reliable disinfection and contaminant removal, resulting in consistently high water quality and dependable outcomes across various water treatment applications.

A New Standard for Bottling Plants

The bottled water market is growing rapidly, and producers are under pressure to maintain the highest standards of water purity while keeping costs under control. A compact, high-efficiency ozone generator not only protects the product, it simplifies operations, reduces energy consumption, and offers peace of mind. Ozone generators and ozone water treatment systems play a crucial role in maintaining optimal water ozone levels and effectively removing organic material, such as bacteria, viruses, and parasites, from the water. Ozone is generally recognized as safe for bottled water applications by regulatory agencies, making it a trusted choice for producers.
