Why Many Ozone Systems Fail

Ozone technology itself is extremely effective when implemented correctly. However, many ozone installations fail to deliver the expected results. In most cases, the problem is not the ozone technology itself, but the way the system was designed or implemented.

The most common causes include the following.

1. Systems Designed Around Equipment Instead of the Process

In many projects, ozone generators are selected first and the system is then designed around that equipment.

Effective ozone systems should be designed around the actual ozone demand of the process, including water chemistry, flow rate, treatment objectives, and contact conditions. When these factors are not properly considered, systems may be undersized or inefficient.

2. Low Ozone Concentration

Many ozone generators on the market produce relatively low ozone concentrations. Low-concentration ozone significantly reduces dissolution efficiency and requires much larger systems to achieve the same treatment effect.

Higher concentration ozone allows much more efficient transfer into water, which enables smaller and more economical systems while improving overall treatment performance.

3. Misleading Generator Output Ratings

Ozone generators are often marketed based on their nominal production rating in grams per hour. However, the important factor in most applications is not how much ozone is produced by the generator, but how much ozone can actually be dissolved and utilized in the process.

Two generators with identical nominal output can produce dramatically different real results depending on ozone concentration and system design.

4. Oversimplified “Package” Systems

Many ozone systems are sold as standardized or “one-size-fits-all” packages.

Because ozone applications vary widely in ozone demand, water chemistry, flow rates, and treatment objectives, systems that are not adapted to the specific application often perform poorly or inefficiently.

5. Lack of Technical Guidance

Many ozone installations fail simply because customers are not provided with sufficient technical information to implement ozone correctly in their specific application.

Successful ozone systems require an understanding of the process being treated as well as the behavior of ozone in that environment.
